Halloween themed nursery rhymes to sing in October

Are you ready to celebrate Halloween? Add some spooky nursery rhymes to your activities this October! Nursery rhymes are perfect for exploring sounds with your child in a fun and relaxed way. Check out my Halloween themed nursery rhymes to sing with babies and toddlers below.

Why are nursery rhymes important?

Nursery rhymes increase your child’s phonological awareness. That is the understanding of sounds within words and the ability to manipulate them. This skill has been linked to higher levels of reading and spelling ability later in life.

Nursery rhymes are perfect for exploring sounds in a fun, relaxed way. They often use rhyming, elongated vowel sounds and repetition. If you would like to include more nursery rhyme inspired activities in your home, click here to read my blog post. But for now, get ready to learn four new Halloween themed nursery rhymes to sing with babies and toddlers.

The Witches of Halloween

First up on my list of Halloween themed nursery rhymes is ‘The Witches of Halloween’. I first heard this nursery rhyme while working in on a research project investigating children’s language acquisition in the early years. I was working in a nursery at the time and we carved some Jack O Lanterns with the kids before taking a walk to the woods. We sat in the woods, lit our lanterns and began singing.

“The witches of Halloween,

Ooo ooo.

The scariest you’ve ever seen,

Ooo ooo.

They come out at night,

And give you a FRIGHT!

The witches of Halloween,

Ooo ooo.”

If you want to listen to the tune, watch this video of ‘The Witches of Halloween’ being sung on YouTube.

The Ghosts of Halloween go Ooo OOO OOO

The next song on my list of Halloween themed nursery rhymes to sing in October is ‘The Ghost of Halloween go ooo ooo ooo.’ This is sung to the tune of Wheels on the Bus. That’s the really fun thing about nursery rhymes, it’s easy to make up your own using well known tunes! Just alter the words to fit your theme and off you go.

“The ghosts of Halloween go Ooo ooo ooo,

Ooo ooo ooo!

Ooo ooo ooo!

The ghosts of Halloween go Ooo ooo ooo,

All night long!

The witches of Halloween go cackle cackle cackle,

Cackle cackle cackle!

Cackle cackle cackle!

The witches of Halloween go cackle cackle cackle,

All night long!

The bats of Halloween go flap flap flap,

Flap flap flap

Flap flap flap

The bats of Halloween go flap flap flap,

All night long!"

Five Orange Pumpkins

The third song on my list of Halloween themed nursery rhymes to sing in October is ‘Five Orange Pumpkins’. Again this is sung to the well-known tune of ’Ten green bottles’. I have given you the first verse, but just keep repeating it until you have no orange pumpkins left sitting on the wall!

“Five orange pumpkins sitting on a wall,

Five orange pumpkins sitting on a wall,

And if one orange pumpkin, should accidentally fall.

There’ll be four orange pumpkins sitting on a wall.”

Five Little Ghosts went spooking one night

The final song on my list of Halloween themed nursery rhymes to sing with babies and toddlers in October is ‘Five little ghosts when spooking one night’. This was inspired by a version of ‘Five Little Ducks’ that we learned at a Tiny Talk Halloween party. I’ve only changed it slightly to fit better with the tune!

“Five little ghosts when spooking one night

Over the hills and out of sight

Mother ghost said OOO OOO OOO

But only four little ghosts said BOO!”

(Repeat the first verse until you have no little ghosts left.)

“Mother ghost went spooking one night,

Over the hills and out of sight,

Mother ghost said OOO OOO OOO

And all her five little ghosts said BOO!”
